Alice Goodwin and Friends: Group Glamour Shoot
Alice Goodwin heads up a group glamour shoot, the kind of ensemble feature that UK readers of the lads'-mag years came to expect.
The British glamour scene around 2009 to 2012 ran on familiar faces. Readers of Nuts, Zoo and Loaded got to know a rotating cast of models who appeared week after week, and the editors learned that putting several of them in the same shoot was a reliable way to make an issue feel like an event. This feature, with Alice Goodwin and a group of fellow models, belongs to that tradition.
Group shoots have their own grammar. Instead of the steady, close attention of a solo set, the camera pulls back and the pictures become about interaction: models sharing the frame, reacting to each other, breaking into the occasional laugh between set-ups. Photographers often chose a single location, a house, a pool or a studio dressed as one, and let the session run like a day out with colleagues. The best of these features feel less staged than they really are.
For the models, an ensemble spread was also a showcase. Appearing alongside others gave each of them exposure to readers who might have followed a different name, and a well-received group feature often led to solo work in the months that followed.
