Ewa Sonnet, Sophie Reade and Peta Todd: CKM in 3D
CKM gathered Ewa Sonnet, Sophie Reade, Peta Todd and several other models for a feature billed in three dimensions.
Around the turn of the decade, 3D was everywhere. Cinemas were selling it, television makers were promising it, and print publishers looked for ways to borrow the excitement. Men’s magazines were quick to try the idea, and CKM, the Polish men’s monthly, put its own spin on it with a multi-model feature presented as a 3D special.
A crowded line-up
The headline names three models outright, Ewa Sonnet, Sophie Reade and Peta Todd, and adds an “and co” that signals a wider cast. Group features of this kind worked rather like a compilation album. Each model typically had her own pages and her own look, and the issue tied them together with a shared theme rather than a single story. For readers it was a chance to see several familiar names in one place.
How print 3D tended to work
Magazine 3D of the period usually relied on anaglyph printing, the red-and-cyan technique viewed through simple card glasses. It asks a lot of a photographer: the image has to be captured or processed with depth in mind, and strong colours can fight with the red and cyan layers. Glamour photography, with its clean backgrounds and clear subject, was a natural fit for the trick, which is probably why so many titles tried it.
The novelty did not last. As the wider 3D boom faded, so did the specials, which makes features like this one a small time capsule of a particular moment in magazine publishing.
The original pages belong to the publisher and are not reproduced here; this is a written record of the feature only.
