Lacey Banghard Presents 2011’s Newcomers
Lacey Banghard introduces a round-up of the glamour scene’s new arrivals of 2011.
Lists were the backbone of lads’-mag culture. Top tens, best-of-the-year features, readers’ polls and “ones to watch” round-ups appeared in every title, because they were easy to read, fun to argue about and perfect for sharing online. This feature belongs to that tradition: a look at the new names who made an impression in 2011, fronted by Lacey Banghard.
How a round-up works
A year-list feature needs a host. Rather than simply stacking pictures, editors often chose an established model to present the selection, opening the piece with her own shoot and giving the round-up a familiar face. The newcomers then follow in turn, each with a picture and a short caption. The format gives readers a reason to revisit the year and a quick introduction to models they may see much more of in the months to come.
For the models included, a place on a list like this was valuable publicity. For the presenter, it was a sign of standing within the scene: you are asked to introduce the new arrivals once readers already know who you are.
A snapshot of a moment
Looking back, features like this one work as a time capsule of glamour modelling at its commercial peak, just before the British men’s weeklies began their decline. They record who was new, who was rising and how the genre presented itself.
