Louise Cliffe: Glamour Shoot
A solo glamour shoot with Louise Cliffe, revisited as part of the blog's archive of British glamour features.
Ask anyone who bought the UK men's weeklies in their heyday what a typical glamour feature looked like and the answer will be much the same: one model, one photographer, one location and a short run of pages that had to make an impression quickly. Louise Cliffe's shoot belongs to that solo format, which was the backbone of the genre.
The solo feature looks simple, but a good one depends on rhythm. The opening picture sets the mood and usually carries the headline. The middle pages vary the framing, moving between full-length and closer portraits, and often change wardrobe or setting once to keep the sequence from feeling repetitive. The final picture tends to be the most relaxed, as if the session has wound down. Editors of the period knew this pattern well and photographers shot with it in mind.
Lighting and styling did a lot of the storytelling. Clean studio sets gave a polished, poster-like look; natural light in a flat or a hotel suite made the pictures feel more personal. Either way, the aim was to present the model confidently and let her personality come through in the pictures rather than in pages of copy.
This page is a written note rather than a gallery: the original photographs belong to their publisher and are not reproduced here. Readers browsing by name can find the rest of the blog's featured models in the A–Z index.
