Marta Zawisza in CKM
Marta Zawisza appears in CKM, Poland's leading men's monthly of the period.
While British readers followed the weeklies, men's magazine culture in Central Europe ran on monthlies, and in Poland the best known of these was CKM. It followed the broad formula of its Western counterparts, combining humour, cars, gadgets and interviews with glamour photography, but it had its own identity and its own pool of models.
Marta Zawisza's feature is one of the many sets that passed through those pages. CKM mixed licensed shoots from abroad with work of its own, which gave its glamour section a range that the British or American titles did not always share.
The CKM look
CKM's glamour pages tended to sit somewhere between the bright, casual style of a UK weekly and the glossier approach of the big international monthlies. Shoots were often built around a location or a simple theme, with swimwear, lingerie or casual styling, and presented with a short Polish-language introduction.
For readers outside Poland, these features were mostly discovered online, as blogs of the time picked up sets from across Europe and shared them with an English-speaking audience. That cross-border circulation was one of the quieter changes of the era: a model featured in a Warsaw-published monthly could find readers far beyond the magazine's own market.
