Monika Pietrasinska in Muscular Development
Monika Pietrasinska appears in Muscular Development, a fitness title, in a feature where athletic photography crosses over into glamour.
Muscular Development is a bodybuilding and fitness magazine, and that alone makes this feature unusual in an archive otherwise dominated by men's lifestyle titles. Fitness magazines have always run model features, but their priorities differ from those of Nuts or Loaded: the pictures are there to show strength, conditioning and discipline as much as style.
Where fitness and glamour meet
A crossover shoot of this kind borrows from both traditions. From fitness photography it takes hard, directional light that picks out definition, poses that suggest movement or effort, and settings such as a gym floor or an outdoor training spot. From glamour it takes the attention to styling, the close portraits and the sense that the model herself, not just her training, is the subject of the feature.
Getting the balance right is the photographer's main job. Lean too far towards the gym and the pages read like a workout guide; lean too far the other way and the feature loses the context that makes it belong in a fitness magazine. The most successful crossover spreads let the athletic side set the tone and keep the glamour elements in support.
Features like this also reached a different audience from the usual lads'-mag readership, which is part of why they stood out on this blog.
