Sabine J in Loaded
Sabine J takes a turn in Loaded, the British monthly that did more than any other title to define the lads' magazine.
Loaded set the template that a generation of men's magazines followed. It was irreverent, funny and unapologetically aimed at a laddish readership, and glamour photography was part of that mix from the start. By the late 2000s the market around it had grown crowded, with weeklies competing for the same readers, but Loaded remained a recognisable name on the shelf.
What a Loaded feature looked like
As a monthly, Loaded could give a feature more room than a weekly. A shoot typically opened with a full-page image, carried a short introduction written in the magazine's knowing, tongue-in-cheek voice, and ran over several spreads. Locations ranged from studios to hotel rooms to outdoor sets, and the styling usually stayed within the familiar glamour vocabulary of swimwear and lingerie.
Sabine J's feature is one of many that passed through those pages during the period, and like a lot of magazine sets from that time it found a second audience online, where readers who had never bought the print issue came across it on blogs and fan pages.
That second life is part of why features like this are still remembered. The magazines themselves have largely disappeared from the newsstand, but the names associated with them continue to be searched for, years after the issues were recycled.
