Sammy Braddy in Zoo

Model Sammy Braddy appeared in a glamour feature for Zoo, one of the two big UK men’s weeklies of its day.

Zoo was a UK men’s weekly, and for most of its life it went head to head with Nuts for the same readers and the same newsagent shelf space. The two titles shared a formula: sport, humour, gadgets, celebrity news and glamour pages, all delivered at a pace no monthly could match. Being published every week meant a constant need for fresh features, and that demand made the weeklies an important showcase for glamour models.

A feature on a weekly clock

A weekly magazine shoot was usually a lean operation. A photographer, a stylist, a hair and make-up artist and a model would cover a full set in a day, often with a straightforward concept that could be lit and styled quickly. The aim was a clean, confident set of pictures that would read well on the page and on the magazine’s website, where galleries increasingly lived alongside the print edition.

Sammy Braddy’s feature for Zoo fits that pattern: a single-model set built for a weekly audience that expected new faces and new shoots in every issue. Features like this were often the point at which readers first came across a model’s name, and they tended to be passed around and linked to well after the issue itself had been replaced on the shelf.
