Alice Goodwin’s 2010 Calendar Photoshoot

The photoshoot behind Alice Goodwin’s calendar for 2010, a format that was a seasonal ritual of British glamour.

A glamour calendar is a different project from a magazine spread. A spread has to work for a week or a month; a calendar has to hang on a wall for a whole year. That changes how a shoot like Alice Goodwin’s 2010 calendar is planned: twelve images, each needing to stand on its own, and a cover that has to sell the whole package on a shop shelf.

Most calendar shoots of the period ran to a tight schedule, often a few days in one location with a run of outfit and set changes. Stylists would map out a loose seasonal arc, lighter looks for the summer months and warmer tones for the winter ones, so that the year felt like a sequence rather than twelve random frames. Photographers shot plenty of variations, because the final choice was usually made later by the publisher.

The calendar season

Glamour calendars were sold heavily in the run-up to Christmas, in high-street shops, newsagents and online, and the shoot itself typically took place months earlier to meet print deadlines. A calendar dated 2010 would therefore have been produced and promoted during 2009, with behind-the-scenes material often released to build interest before it reached the shelves.

The calendar pictures belong to their publisher and are not reproduced on this page. If you are following Alice Goodwin’s features, two other write-ups on this site cover different shoots of hers.
