Rosie Jones and Friends: A British Glamour Line-up

Rosie Jones takes her place in a "Britain's best" glamour line-up, one of the ranking features that UK men's titles loved to run.

If there was one editorial device the British lads' mags never tired of, it was the ranking. Best-of lists, readers' polls and "Britain's best" line-ups filled pages cheaply, gave readers something to argue about and, crucially, brought a whole roster of familiar models together under one headline. This feature, with Rosie Jones among a group of fellow models, is a good example of the format.

How the line-up worked

A line-up feature is built differently from a standard shoot. Rather than one long sequence of pictures, the pages are divided into short entries, each with a model's name, a picture or two and a line of copy. The photography is usually drawn from several sessions, so the challenge for the designer is to make different lighting and locations sit comfortably together. Some magazines solved this with a unifying backdrop or a shared colour scheme; others leaned into the variety and let each entry look like a postcard from a different shoot.

For readers, these features were a quick way to catch up on who was working in the genre at the time. For the models, a place on the list was useful exposure.
