Rosie Jones steps in front of the camera for Nuts, the British weekly at the centre of the lads'-mag boom.
Behind every Nuts feature was a production line that rarely stopped. As a weekly, the magazine had to plan shoots well ahead, keep a bank of finished sets ready to drop into any issue, and still find room for something topical when the week demanded it. Models who could deliver a usable set quickly, and who readers recognised from previous issues, were the backbone of that system.
This feature with Rosie Jones came out of that system, and it followed the house style: clean lighting, simple sets, an upbeat introduction written in the magazine's informal voice, and a layout designed to be flicked through on a commute or a lunch break.
Reading the weekly format
- Speed: features were planned to be read in minutes, not studied.
- Familiarity: returning models built a sense of continuity from one issue to the next.
- Interaction: readers' polls and votes fed back into who appeared again.
That last point mattered more than it might seem. The weeklies listened closely to their readers, and a model who did well in a poll could expect to return. Many of the familiar faces of the period built their profile this way, one weekly feature at a time.
